Join my short and sweet Bike Tour in Helsinki: From urban to nature and back - just in 1 hour!

See a refreshing side of the city and awaken all your senses! Let's explore the shorelines of Kalasatama and Mustikkamaa, where the urban world meets the calm of nature. This 60 min easy guided cycling tour is organised by Kati Pankka, as part of her studies: Competence Demonstration for the Further Vocational Qualification in Guide Services at Perho, and therefore it's free of charge (0 EUR).

Details of the bike tour

Route

Starting point:
Nereidi Sculpture, Redi Shopping Center, Middle entrance, Leonkatu 8, 00540 Helsinki, FINLAND

Finishing point:
Teurastamo District, Työpajankatu 2, 00580 Helsinki, FINLAND

Route description:

Very easy route, but basic cycling skills are required.
5,5 km total length
Mostly flat with approximately 50 m incline (moderate uphill) and 50 m decline (moderate downhill)
Mostly asphalt cycleways and compacted gravel paths
Approximately: cycling time 30 min + talking time 30 min

Easy Cycling

This is an easy and relaxed tour, but not a cycling lesson.

You need to know how to ride and safely operate your own bike. Please check that you know how to use the brakes, check the tire pressures and ensure that you have an operational bike bell. You need to be able to show hand signals when riding your bike, this is obligatory in Finland.

Cyclist minimun age is 18 years. There are no set maximum age limits, but please read the route description and all other info on this page and evaluate if the tour is realistically suitable for you.

This tour is small-kid-family friendly: Kids who ride along with the same bike (on a cild bike seat or bike trailer) as their guardians are warmly welcome to join.

Bring along

Your own bike or use a HSL City Bike (at your own cost).
Your own helmet.
A bottle of water.
Weatherproof clothes (remember that the weather can change drastically from one moment to another in Helsinki)
Open mind and readiness to explore!

Please note, that no food or drinks are included in the tour, so bring snacks if you think you might need them.

Accessibility

Start and end points are near public transportation: metro, bus, tram. You can travel with your own bike in a metro (please reserve some extra time for your travel, because you need to use the elevators and bicycle spots in the metros are limited and shared with people traveling with prams and wheelchairs). Start and end points are right next to HSL City Bike Stations.

This tour is not accessible by wheelchairs or other mobility aids, except specialised bikes.

Not suitable for those with hearing difficulties or for those with difficulties understanding spoken English.

We will start by cycling around Mustikkamaa Island and finish the tour at Teurastamo District, which is a quaint centre of urban and culinary culture in Kalasatama, Helsinki. You can stick around and have lunch at one of the many exciting restaurants and explore some unique small-scale production facilities, like an ice cream factory, a bakery, a distillery, a coffee roastery, and the atmospheric and inviting urban yard that is open to all people in Helsinki!
