Responsible Travel by Explore with Kati

Explore with Kati is a micro-business run by a native Finnish solo entrepreneur Kati Pankka. Currently, her services include local guiding in Helsinki, Finland. These guided tours are designed using responsible tourism actions as fundamental building blocks.

Practical Responsible Tourism Actions

My aim is to provide as responsible and regenerative guided tours as possible, but my journey is only beginning. I have only started producing my own Helsinki tours during 2026 after my maternity leave, but here below you can read about my guiding principles that will guide my way through my product development.

Climate friendly tours by foot or bike

I have purposefully chosen to focus on human-powered activities to minimise my tours carbon footprint.

My tours start from places that you can easily reach on foot, bike, or public transport.

Private tours can always be designed to be accessible also for people with movement limitations, or disablitities and families with small children.

Small group sizes

Maximum 15 people on guided walking tours and maximum 10 people on cycling tours.
Smaller group sizes are a statement againts masstourism and also allows us to visit places where bigger groups can't go.

Supporting local businesses

Smaller group sizes allow us opportunities to visit smaller local brick-and-mortar shops, cafes etc.

When I share recommendations on places to visit, restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops to check out, you can rest assured that I'm always encouraging you to opt for local smaller businesses over big international chains.

Plant-based food and sustainable Finnish fish

Some of my tours include food, and when that happens, I always start with the default setting of choosing vegetarian food.

Fish is an important part of traditional Finnish cuisine, and therefore it may be offered as an add-on. I have discovered that finding genuinely Finnish local fish is not always so easy in Helsinki, as farmed Norwegian salmon tends to dominate the market. I will always choose Finnish sustainably fished alternatives when available. When not available I will encourage my guests to consider the vegetarian options.

I'm a pescatarian myself and am opting for vegan options more and more often.

Nature appreciation

Many of my tours will take you from the urban areas to the nature or seaside of Helsinki. I will share insights and advice on how to protect nature and our dear Baltic Sea. I will show you the beauty of the nearby nature, so that you will learn to appreciate it and hopefully will then also want to take action to protect it.

Female owned and LGBTQI+ friendly

At the moment, I'm running this business alone. However, I couldn't do it without the valuable help that I get from my retired parents and my spouse. The cheering from our toddler also keeps me motivated to relentlessly keep searching for ways to build a better future. <3
